As you can probably tell, I'm slowly easing my way through actual make up application. For the longest time, I've only been so passive of my love for them that I literally just look at them and not bother on applying them to myself. Take this eyeshadow trio for example. The lovely team from Bourjois Paris have thoughtfully sent me this and it has just been sitting inside of my vanity drawer for the longest time. Doh! But since I have decided on taking some personal projects into consideration, more on that soon but all I can say is that it involves finally being able to get this out for a try! Such. A. Struggle. It's probably not best to start off with smokey eyes at once but I just couldn't help it!
I personally find these colors more suitable and flattering to my morena skin tone than the dark and blackish shades of smokey eyes. However, I have the oiliest lids in the history so the shimmer and glitter is off-putting at first but nothing a trusted eyelid primer can't fix. The formulation is silky in texture which makes it easy to blend. It's not also pain in the butt to remove and won't leave your eyes looking like a panda even after washing up. It's bound to last for utmost 8 hours but I haven't gotten around to using it for more than 5 hours to date. I start off by taking the medium shade with a shader brush and packed it all over my lid then blend it all out. With a pencil brush I will then take the darkest shade and outline a v-shape on the outer corner of my eyes then dragged it along my upper and lower lash line. With a thin liner brush, take the lightest shade and put a little over the inner corners of my eyes and the inner 1/3 of my lower lash line. This bit always works for me as I find it always helps in opening up my eyes. And then with a flat brush, apply some more of the lightest shade to your brow bone area for highlighting purposes. I still haven't got the eyeliner part going right for me so for this look, I just took the darkest shade with a brush and pushed it into my upper lash line as an alternative. Curl your lashes, apply two coats of mascara and... you're donezo!
Although it is supposed to be mixed and blended altogether to achieve the smokey eye finish, what I love more about it is that you can also make use of each shadow individually and get different looks by just blending it out. Take the lightest shade over any eyeshadow base and put it all over the lid, blend it out and you're good for a daytime look. For a warmer look, take the medium shade and blend it all over your lid. As for the darkest shade, you can line your upper and lower lines with it for a more defined look. Which makes this eyeshadow trio ideal for traveling as well as you can go from day to night with this beaut! Not to mention the packaging is lightweight as it is made of plastic so it's easy to just pop inside your makeup bag and you're good to go.
I have to say I am more of a lipstick kind of girl that if I have to choose between doing my eyes or whipping out the loveliest shade for my lips, I'd choose the latter in a heartbeat. But when the world of beauty offers you a selection of warm and bronze hues in an eyeshadow trio, you make the most out of it. And this is me making the most out of it.
How about you, are you an eyeshadow or a lipstick kind of girl?
I am very much aware that this is no different from the Lil Sum'n Sum'n look I posted a few weeks back - all black everything and a li'l sum'n. But with a different feel to it, festival vibes actually which isn't what I was aiming for initially. I was invited over to a superhero themed birthday party over the weekend and I tried my best to dress up as Green Arrow (of some sort) but somehow ended up looking like a festival girl lost in Legoland instead. But hey, at least I tried, plus I have a Green Arrow inspired eye makeup to go with it too and I thought the kimono will pass as a cape. Superhereos and capes, amirite?
It's always fun going to themed parties as you have the liberty to interpret your take on the theme and get away with it. I don't have fond memories of Halloween parties so when a situation presents itself like this one, I make the most of it. This kimono is under my most loved wardrobe piece at the moment. I've worn it with everything and everywhere! I find its easier to throw it over a plain ensemble and let its pretty prints stand out and do the talking. I've also worn it with a white tank top and tattered denim jeans for a more relaxed daytime look. And since I'll be going to a party where I'm likely to move around from one place to another, I decided to not be bothered by the thought of having to leave my things behind or have someone look after it for me every single time so I went away with the backpack accessory trick. And since my legs are all bare, I thought a high cut boots will balance it off as to not appear as leggy as possible.
As you may have noticed, I've probably thrown in a trend or two into this look. And for someone who's very vocal about of not being big on trends, this is a first. But working your way through a trend is still an individual choice and it's one way of expressing yourself so I say, just go with it! Whether you're after the boho chic ensemble, model off duty look, or you know, indie pop star vibes. As for me, I just put on together three of my favorite things at the moment - the kimono, the backpack, and the boots while thinking of being in Splenda '14. Although if I'm being honest when I saw my favorite Rockstar Romeo carrying a backpack similar to mine in one of his recent photos, I can't help but feel validated. But that's just me and my forever fangirl fashion reference and state of mind. Sheesh.
There are decisions in this lifetime that can be life changing and these life changing decisions are worth taking especially if it's going to make your life easy and comfortable. However these life changing decisions do not always have to include a suitcase, a passport or a one way ticket to another city. We can always start small and by small I actually mean, you know, choosing to wear the right clothes a certain occasion calls for. You know me, it's never going to get any deeper or further than that in here. I never would've thought of doing so myself had I not experienced the cons of lacking them. That's why I have finally decided on investing in some proper workout gear. And now my life is changed forever - for the better, comforter, easier.
1. Forever21 Activewear Athletic Bra(similar here). If there is one thing that can get me into a wakey wakey mode so early in the morning for a run or a workout, it's the thought of wearing a pretty (sports) top while I'm at it. I am not really a pink person but this somehow speaks to my inner grade school self who's childhood hero is Pink 5 of The Power Rangers and let's admit it, anything hot pink will always have an invisible tug in our pretty little hearts. And oh - the thin, criss-cross strappy details just add a bit more sexy feel to it. Like what is said on the description, these sports bra are lightweight, stretchable and with scooped neckline and wide-strapped undersides which are vital considerations especially for those who are blessed on the breast department. It is made of transpirable material which means it will give off any vapor or odor or sweat at once. Although this is limited to be used for low impact sports only, it provides the support and the comfort you will ever need. (Also, I'm already sneakily thinking of wearing them out and about as an inner wear and just throw in a blazer for cover up.)
2. Underarmour Side Tapered Semi-Fitted Shorts(similar here). When I picked this up, I already have the shoes I have in consideration hence the matchy feel written all over this workout ensemble. I picked up a larger size than usual because you never want to have a pair of tight bottoms when you're out running. There's an undergarment attached inside for extra support and meshed sides to avoid flashing anyone with your knickers. The line's called Heatgear so I guess it's right to claim it will make you feel cool, dry and light during your workout or any outdoor activities you'll be exposed to the heat. And lastly, shorts doesn't have to be boring to be functional, a little pop of color never hurt anyone.
3. Nike Air Move Max (GS) Trainers. Surely these pair of trainers have served me its purpose in more ways than one - for sports, leisure and for fangirl fashion, as I've mentioned here. But obviously, these babies are going to get their dose of sports fix now that I have a matching sportswear for it. I can easily get motivated and in this case, the mere thought of looking pretty with a punch while working out is more than enough motivation for me. And in your book, what says pretty with a punch more than a pretty pair of Nike kicks? Nada. Thought so too.
I'm about to take these ensemble for a spin this coming weekend for the 2014 MILO Marathon 5K Run!!! Surprisingly, this will just be my first ever marathon run so I came prepared, as you probably can tell. Anyone else coming? You'll probably find it easier to spot me now I've showed you what I'll be wearing - a walking, running, panting ball of pink number. See you on the finish line!
This is what happens when you let Youtube videos get to you... I have seen this trend's gotten so massive it's all over the search bar and recommended tabs that I was convinced I can actually pull it off as well. What do you think?
So this is how this face went down. I am obviously struggling here. Can you spot the eyebags? Yes. They're still there. After slapping a massive amount of concealer. Can you spot the trademark wing eyeliner? No. It's because they're not there. I am still in the process of perfecting the application, let alone the wing detail. That's why instead of taking the risk of a possibly ruined look altogether, let's just leave it here - the Kylie Jenner lips, for now.
I already have so much respect for those who can actually create a look slash tutorial that really ends up so similar to the celebrity they've got the inspiration from. And after giving it a try myself, my then respect has reached a whole new level. Although this isn't one of them - yet, as you can probably tell but I can honestly say this isn't going to be my first and last attempt. (And I promise to try and get better sooner! Fingers crossed.) It's such a fun thing to do, a rather productive way of spending my free time and a very enjoyable one at that. So I guess, here goes nothing, eh. To the next Faces by Joys - or not. For now, I'm very certain there's still going to be a next one. Exciting times!!!
Before we proceed, I need you to know 3 things. First, I don't take coffee shops and cafes lightly. Number two, I take coffee invitations ever so seriously. And lastly, I am a self-declared advocate of a certain coffee-related cause for all mankind. (I came across these lines from Hawaii Five-O during the usual banter between Steve and Danny and from then on, I declared myself as the founder of "coffee is not a relationship, it is a beverage" advocacy). That's how pretty serious I can get, boys and girls.
CAFE+ is probably the Bulacan's most hyped coffee shop for a while now. Or at least that's how I know it. There was even a time when all I can see and hear is "CAFE+ tayo!" from one too many people in my life and a whole lovely lot from my timeline and Instagram feed with tagged photos and check in details of the cafe's location. Me being the three things mentioned above, you're probably wondering why it took me so long to jump into the bandwagon. Well there's that and my ever reluctant self to indulge a hype while it's out there - I'm just uncool like that I guess? Hahaha, latebloomer forever. Until a perfect situation presented itself. Few friends from the South decided to come over The North to see what our humble province has to offer. I was lucky enough to be invited over for lunch and coffee so I am now a "CAFE+ virgin no more!"
CAFE+ as a whole is such a brilliant idea. I have mad admiration to the one who came up with the whole "coffee.brunch.dessert" idea because it's such a good and effective marketing strategy! Not to mention the place itself - in this day and age where everything is Instagramable or Pinterestesque, consumers are not just after how your products taste like, they have upped their standards, they are after the visuals and all that jazz too! And then after all that, you have to have a reasonable price for all of your offerings. The whole time I was there, I was obsessing over the whole lot! The menus written in typography. The lights strategically placed all over the counter and corners. The mirror walls creating an illusion of space and modern living. The way they cater you your orders - coffee served in Mason jars, cakes that are far too pretty to eat and meals that actually taste good and will actually make you full. Basically, it is our typical Pinterest coffee shop brought to life. And I guess right about now, it is safe to say that is well worth the hype after all.
However, outside of those technical things which are the defaults, I still have a particular checklist of my own. Shocker. The location has to be out of the ordinary. I want my cafe to be in a retreat site, where people would actually decide to go and not just a luring option. Needless to say, I'd rather not do fancy cafe and coffee anymore unless really called for. The ambiance has got be really chilled out and conducive to individuality. Even when I'm with good company and especially if I'm all by my lonesome self. It has to make me want to stay for a long time, even finish a book if I can and practice actual coffee shop etiquette. Which basically means, I can go there in the morning and then still be there till lunchtime and I actually order food from the counter as the time pass me by. The caffeine fix. I am very easy to please, I don't even judge the drink by its cuppa or its price tag. I just want a good conversation to go with any cuppa Joe every single time if possible. But it is always a welcome surprise to be wowed by a drink at first sip and/or at first sight.
The location. CAFE+ is strategically located along the highway. I think it is a private property turned into a business venture that's why it is not really a busy place to begin with, there's this homey feel to it. It can hold a good amount of crowd, it can grow big and small the whole time but it won't make you feel like you can't have your own little bubble of quite, there will always be enough for space for that. But oh, there's a very limited parking space though. The ambiance. We stayed there for an awful long time. Like we had brunch outside - we had the Tapsilog meal which is pretty decent. Not really remarkable but it's fine - literally. Since the beef strips are shredded and fine and sprinkled on top of the rice. And then eventually had our dessert time inside - I had the unforgiving Cookie Butter Cheesecake which is an instant favorite!!! I looooove love looooove cheesecakes and I usually just go for the usual berry cheesecakes but this one is just on another level guys! There were little kisses all over it!!! After some more time, we decided on getting Peach and Mango Waffle for the group and we all loved it too! I now think all waffles should be served that way! So you can really tell by now how we were able to maximize the experience and the place at once. The caffeine fix. Mine was love at first sip. I had the "chocnut" flavoured iced coffee, I think it's called Peanut Butter Iced Coffee or something. And this is an instant favorite! There's nothing big about it, but it tastes like Choc Nut boys and girls! Chocnut in a cuppa with caramel whip on top!!! That is all I'm saying. I think with this kind of cafes, you can't help but play favorites since they don't change the menu a lot, you tend to order the same thing over and over again and it's fine because it's worth it? CAFE+ is that kind.
See? I do love me a good chat about a cafe, especially if it tickles my fancy. So if I do extend a CAFE+ invitation your way, it also goes without saying that I basically just want to spend the rest of my day with you and your stories. And if I throw a coffee invitation your way at all, which I don't usually just throw around, you already know what it actually means to me. Still not a relationship, let us all be clear about that. HA! And I can already see myself coming back here some time soon with a good book that I'd probably finish in one CAFE+ sitting with a cuppa of that Peanut Butter flavoured coffee.Because, in the words of the legend that is Matthew Timothy Healy, "life's too short to drink crappy coffee and cry over boys who don't care".Or not, oooops! But yup. I can definitely smell the memory already!
Something Red is a personal myth. Whenever I feel like I need to kick butt or accomplish anything, I wear something red - lips, nails, shoes. Since this week is shaping up to be a challenging one, or at least the week I'm finally off to a new step one, I thought it's time to put 'something red' into practice again. I decided to kill 'em with the nails this time and I actually fell in love with the finished look!
OMG Nail Colors in Salsa. Trust me when I say this is a good 'un. When I picked this up, I was in search exactly for that - a good red. And this lives up to it. One coat is opaque enough and it leaves a smooth and glossy finish as it is. But if you want a deeper shade of red, applying a second coat is the way to go. It's not really bright or off-putting, it's just a proper, classic red.
OPI Matte Top Coat. Now this stuff is amaaaaaaazing! I didn't know a top coat's all it's going to take to achieve that matte finish. What a loser. And so now, I've been trying real hard to stop myself from matte-fying my nails every single time. It's so cool, one clean sweep of this matte top coat over your base nail polish and you're done - let it dry for a few minutes and that's it!
WWJS. Matte nails? It's a fresh take on a usual manicure so why not have it! If you're tired of the usual glossy finish and you want to try something different then this is an easy way to get it, as opposed to more complicated nail arts out there. Having a matte top coat in your nail polish stash isn't going to hurt for in times you want to spice up your good old red and/or give the classic French mani a twist, it will surely come in handy. This one from OPI does the job for me! Also, after obviously finding a good red from the OMG range, I'm now on the look out for a good black. Any suggestions? Because that Black Matte French Mani needs to happen! Obvs. Who's with me?
